About daryl cheong

When I was 8, I was determined to be a game designer, having been influenced by virtual worlds such as Club Penguin and Wiglington and Wenks to connect individuals over a common love of storytelling, world-building, and interaction. Years later, whether I studied theatre or literature, or built my professional footing in film, these values have not changed: community through and in storytelling.

I am a filmmaker, programmer, critic, and community organiser based in Singapore and Southeast Asia. As programmer, I have curated at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), local queer festival Short Circuit, Singapore Film Society, Perspectives Film Festival, National Youth Film Awards, organised its inaugural Script Lab, and was trained at the Asian Film Archive x Objectifs Film Programmers Lab. As critic, I am Editor-in-Chief of Exposure Print, trained at the Far East Film Festival Campus and SGIFF Youth Jury and Critics Programme, and has been published in MARG1N, Rice Media, Easternkicks, Taiwan News, HK Magazine, Pioneer Road Journal, amongst others. As community organiser, I run *fff, one of the biggest film communities in Singapore, underground screening space Blind Boars, and was President of the Nanyang Technological University Film Society.

As filmmaker, I was part of the Freedom Film Festival Lab mentored by Yeo Siew Hua. As writer-director, my latest work Talking Photography (2024) was nominated for the Singapore Youth Film Festival. As producer, I support emerging and singular young talents, particularly from marginal communities: immigrants, queer, women, and racial minorities. My most recent films include My Wonderful Life (dir. Calleen Koh, 2024 / Momo Film Co. / SXSW & Annecy), Singaporeans on the Kamo River and Dogma 65 (dir. Seth Cheong, 2025 / Seashorts Film Festival, Jogja-Netpac & SGIFF), The 4PLY Clandestine System (dir. Natalie Sin, 2025 / SGIFF), and We Learn to Breathe in Distant Places (dir. Azina, 2025 / SGIFF), amongst many others.

Outside of film, for my leadership and community service, I have been recognised with the inuagural Nanyang Technological University Talent Scholarship, SAF Chief Commando Officer Coin, Goh Chok Tong NextGen Outstanding Student Leader Award, and CITI-YMCA Youth-for-Causes Merit Award.
